Position Title:               College Counselor

Department:                  Upper School

Travel Percentage:      20%

 

Overall Responsibility

The College Counselor will advise students and their parents regarding the college search, selection, and application process, including such items as course selection, extracurricular and community service involvement, and scholarships.

 

Education

Master’s Degree in Counseling preferred or Bachelor’s Degree and three years of college counseling experience.

 

Work Experience

Required: 3 years related experience in College Admissions or High School College Counseling.

  • A Christian who is committed to Christian education with a Christian worldview
  • A college counseling philosophy that aligns with Northlake Christian School’s philosophy and commitment to educating the whole child
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, parents, and students through a process that focuses on identifying the best possible college match for each student
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, listening, speaking, computer, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the administration, faculty, and key members of the Northlake Christian School community
  • A love of working with high school students and mentoring them through the admission search and application process
  • A desire to work with parents as partners in the process, even as students are recognized as driving their college search and application

Responsibilities: 

  • Implement and lead a comprehensive college counseling program for students in grades 8-12.  
  • Along with Upper School Administration, counsel students individually on curriculum and graduation requirements, the college process, including self-exploration, academic planning, setting realistic goals, resume writing, essay enhancement, application development, and self-advocacy.
  • Consult regularly with college admission representatives on current college admission trends through phone conversations, attendance at national conferences and visitation programs, and by meeting with college admission representatives on campus.
  • Write and coordinate the writing of letters of recommendation for all students on assigned caseload.
  • Facilitate the use of Naviance, web-based college and career counseling software, for students, parents, and administrators to increase the accessibility of college information.
  • Assist with Scholarship search and applications for all students on your caseload.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time in front of a computer.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities, such as but not limited to, 30 lbs. unassisted, bending, standing, or walking.
