The Position

The Director of Athletics is responsible for the overall strategic vision for athletics and physical education at Brookstone School. Reporting directly to the Head of School and overseeing a highly motivated group of coaches and faculty, s/he oversees the implementation of all curricular and co-curricular programs related to athletics in accordance with the School’s philosophical approach. S/he is a critical leader for the entire school community and serves on the Leadership Team that directs Brookstone’s overall operations.    



Strategic Vision & Planning

Working with the Head of School, senior administration, and the Athletics Department staff, the Director of Athletics:  

  • Establishes and oversees the implementation of the School’s Statement of Values and Guiding Principles regarding athletics
  • Articulates the School’s approach to athletics to its various constituencies: students, parents, faculty, staff, administration, Board of Trustees, alumni, league officials, and interested parties
  • Supervises the development and implementation of the interscholastic programs and physical education curricula
  • Serves as the primary bridge between the athletics program and the other curricular and programmatic areas of the School
  • Supports, with the College Counseling Office and in aligned pursuit of expressed college counseling goals, the School’s guidance and advocacy of students aspiring to play sports in college   
  • Supports the Admissions Office with the processing of prospective applicants and families   


Leadership & Management

Working with the Athletics Administration staff, the Director of Athletics:

  • Supervises and evaluates all members of the athletic department staff, including associate athletic director, trainers, and administrative support.
  • Oversees the hiring, staffing, orientation, evaluation, and mentoring of all coaches
  • Indirectly supervises physical education teachers in collaboration with the PE Department Head
  • Supports varsity coaches in the administration of their programs
  • Supports the training staff in its care of students, faculty, and staff
  • Coordinates, in collaboration with the Athletics Trainer and Nurse, the education of the coaching staff regarding safety, CPR, and first aid
  • Establishes and administrates, along with the Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations, the budget for the Athletics Department
  • Manages the schedule of facility use as it relates to athletic practices, games, and events
  • Coordinates the maintenance and preparation of athletic facilities along with the Director of Facilities
  • Supervises the scheduling of athletics facilities for Brookstone use and non-Brookstone use
  • Communicates, in coordination with the Director of Marketing and Communications, athletics-related messaging to the media and other internal and external audiences, as appropriate and necessary
  • Reinforces school culture, distinctives, and the mission and vision of the school through athletics
  • Oversees compliance with GHSA rules and regulations with respect to athlete eligibility and coaching assignments


Additional Responsibilities

Additionally, the Director:

  • Meets regularly with the Head of School to provide current updates
  • As appropriate, teaches a class, serves as an advisor, and/or coaches a sport
  • Extends beyond the job description to support the mission and goals of the School

 Skills and Qualifications

A qualified candidate will have at least a Master’s degree and experience in areas of athletics and athletics administration. This person will understand school settings covering a range of grade levels and will demonstrate an interest in and enthusiasm for a high quality education. Written and oral communication skills, as well as organizational acumen, are necessary. Qualified candidates will also possess the ability to connect and collaborate with a variety of people and constituencies within and outside of the School community.
