The director of summer and vacation camps reports directly to the head of school. S/he develops and supervises the summer/vacation camps and programming at the school to provide exploratory learning and enrichment courses and activities. S/he will seek to increase the school’s visibility with prospective full-time students, peer institutions, and other organizations in the wider community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The director of summer/vacation camps will:

  • Develop, market, schedule, and oversee the entire summer and vacation camp operation, including academic, extra-curricular, and off-campus activities.
  • Devise and manage the registration process for prospective campers.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a cadre of competent and properly trained camp counselors and staff members to organize and facilitate the camp programs, ensuring that all counselors perform their duties with the highest level of professionalism.
  • Create and monitor all safety and health programs for the summer and vacation camps.
  • Schedule regular meetings of summer and vacation camp staff to evaluate, develop, and implement activities that reflect the vision of the school and meets optimal standards of safety.
  • Provide camp orientation for counselors prior to the start of camp and provide performance feedback throughout camp sessions.
  • Monitor and establish standards of camper behavior to provide a productive environment and to ensure the optimal condition and safety of all equipment and facilities.
  • Handle disciplinary issues.
  • Arrange for thoughtful communications with and events for the parents of the summer and vacation camps.
  • Create, maintain, and communicate all records, as required by the school.
  • Partner with the director of admissions and director of school operations to identify and recruit qualified students for the school program and to create print and online marketing materials for summer camp, produce a website page of summer camp offerings, and generate enthusiasm for and promote camp’s success.
  • Work with the business office to develop a budget and to ensure the profitability of the program.
  • Coordinate with school administration to arrange for summer camp facility and/or equipment needs.
  • Represent and serve as official spokesperson of the summer camp at local events, fairs, and festivals.
  • Prepare appropriate summary reports for the school, as directed by the head of school.
  • Collaborate with other camp directors to share and gain new ideas.
  • Assume responsibility for other projects as assigned by the head of school.
  • Oversee Vacation Camps throughout the school year: Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, and Spring break.
