This position will serve on the Leadership Team of Cape Henry Collegiate. The Director of Communications will articulate and promote the vision, image, and goals of the School so that the school community and the external community gain a greater appreciation of who we are and what we do.  Using print, electronic, web, and media relations, the Director of Communications will be responsible for ensuring brand messaging for internal and external marketing, communications from the Head of School, advancement materials, web content, social media, and video.

The Director of Communications Duties (include, but are not limited to):

  • Find creative, thoughtful, and engaging ways to tell Cape Henry Collegiate’s story to internal and external communities.
  • Develop and maintain a strategic and comprehensive communications strategy and calendar, with annual communications goals, that support and advance the School’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Plan and execute programs that enhance the visibility and public perception of Cape Henry Collegiate and drive increased engagement with prospective and current constituencies.
  • Monitor all forms of media (web, social, print, email, etc.) to ensure clear, consistent, and transparent communication among all Cape Henry Collegiate constituencies to receive timely and up-to-date information and respond to online feedback as appropriate
  • Work collaboratively to support Cape Henry’s academic, recruiting, and fundraising objectives.
  • Cultivate relationships with media outlets to ensure greater visibility in the local and regional community.
  • Oversee communications to ensure that they align with the mission, core values, and strategic plan.
  • Attend school-wide events in order to capture and create appropriate communication about those events.
  • Participate in risk management and guide crisis communication.
  • Manage the communications and marketing budget.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field. Master’s preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership and experience in the communications, marketing, and public relations fields.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • An outgoing, personable, respectful, and engaging demeanor.
  • Familiarity with best practices in communication, marketing, and public relations within independent schools, higher education or non-profit organizations.
  • Strong strategic, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in effectively supervising, coaching, and mentoring staff.
