OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Head of School and a member of the senior leadership team, the Head of Middle School is the administrative leader of the Middle School (grades 5-8) division. The Head of Middle School successfully executes all administrative and executive roles in the Middle School; administers its educational and auxiliary programs; implements all school policies, procedures, and practices; and maintains a strong, positive, and safe school culture. This is a full time 12-month position.

Charlotte Preparatory School is a PK-8 school of 400 students located in Charlotte’s beautiful South Park neighborhood. The school is in the process of completing a new strategic plan, is launching a new marketing campaign, and is celebrating its 50th anniversary. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Model the core values of Charlotte Preparatory School and support its mission
  • Create a well-rounded, comprehensive learning environment that respects and supports all aspects of the development of the middle school student
  • Oversee the high school placement process
  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations and decision-making for the Middle School
  • Work closely with the curriculum director to oversee all aspects of the curriculum and its execution by middle school teachers
  • Maintain strong relationships with and among all middle school faculty
  • Oversee the hiring, supervising, and evaluating of middle school faculty and staff in conjunction with the Head of School
  • Support all co-curricular activities including athletics programs, arts programs, advisory, character and leadership education, life skills, assemblies, and field trips.
  • Implement Middle School programs in support of the strategic plan of the School
  • Oversee the effective implementation of student behavior policies and practices
  • Monitor student progress and performance, review reports and grades, and analyze assessments and standardized testing
  • Create and implement effective communications protocols between the Middle School and parents
  • Create and maintain the Middle School schedule
  • Plan grade level and divisional faculty meetings
  • Conduct parent education forums
  • Serve as a positive, collaborative member of the administrative team, including acting as an ambassador for the school with prospective parents, other schools, and other constituencies
  • Work in close collaboration with the heads of Early School and Lower School and Curriculum Director to
    • Facilitate strong connections between divisions
    • Create a cohesive, rational, school-wide curricular scope and sequence
    • Create smooth transitions for students moving between divisions
  • Stay current with educational trends in order to best inform the educational experience of students
  • Coordinate with the school counselor and learning specialist to manage the school’s counseling, character development, and student leadership programs and ensure an effective program of student learning support services
  • In conjunction with the Director of Finance and Operations, budget and manage Middle School resources
  • Serve as a member of the admissions committee
  • Attend weekend and/or evening functions and events as required
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School

 

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate field required; Master’s Degree strongly preferred
  • At least five years of independent school administrative experience
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with middle school students, curriculum, and programs
  • A genuine commitment to and respect for this age group

DIRECT SUPERVISION

Responsible for supervising:

  • Middle School faculty and staff
  • Fine Arts faculty
  • Instructors/coaches for athletics program (in conjunction with Athletic Director), clubs, and electives.
  • Middle School administrative assistant and Dean(s) of Student Life
