Position Purpose: The position is responsible for supporting the learning of math students individually and in small groups, collaborating, coaching, modeling, and consulting with lead and support teachers about best practices in teaching mathematics, and staying abreast of current research and best practices in mathematics instruction. As a math specialist, this entails creating a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of every student; establishing effective rapport with students; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in math; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members. These students receive instruction from the Math Specialist in small-group and in-class. Depending on individual student needs, components of different math programs or methodologies are utilized including, but not exclusive to Singapore Math.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Advanced degree and 3-5 years of classroom experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and facilitative skills
  • Desire to plan and work collaboratively on a team is essential
  • Ability to differentiate instruction, including working with students with learning differences, and the skill and willingness to adjust to student understanding and misunderstanding
  • Experience with modeling math concepts, manipulatives, and technology that supports math learning with young children
  • Experience with Singapore Math preferred
  • Familiar with math assessments (informal and formal)
  • Displays proficiency in all related computer applications, including; Mac OS, Apple iOS, Microsoft Office programs, email and Internet, and Google Apps for Education Suite, experience with assistive technology is a plus
  • Flexible teaching background and interest in teaching electives, coaching and/or advising clubs is a plus
