Girls Preparatory School (GPS) was founded in 1906 to provide girls with the necessary courses to pursue a college education. GPS has proudly graduated almost 6,000 young women since then. Currently, 130 faculty and staff serve 550 girls in grades 6-12 with a college preparatory curriculum that includes a full complement of humanities, arts, and STEM courses, and co curricular programs of leadership development, athletics, performing arts, and community engagement.


The ideal candidate is a physical education teacher who leads through a variety of games and activities sequenced to develop an enthusiasm for physical activity and lifelong fitness. He or she will engage students in leadership opportunities to build both skills and confidence. The teacher is knowledgeable and able to present students with information and the means to develop a healthy appreciation of lifelong fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Class activities offer play that stretches present ability and develops unexplored skills. Team, individual, and group work are a vital part of the physical education curriculum, which is designed to build each student’s ability to lead, follow, and work with classmates toward common success. Positive character traits are encouraged with an emphasis on fair play, effort, consideration, cooperation, diligence, and an attitude of contribution to the whole. 


The GPS Athletics mission includes teaching girls to be team players, understand the importance of mental toughness, accept challenges enthusiastically, and value strength, fitness, stamina, and good health. The bonds of friendship that come from working hard every day as teammates—striving for excellence toward an ambitious goal and developing the fundamental values of discipline and self-improvement—are part of athletics at Girls Preparatory School. Ultimately, the GPS athletic environment is about aiming to be the very best on the field of competition, in the classroom, and in life. That attitude is shared by the outstanding staff of award-winning GPS coaches and more than 300 student-athletes who are involved at the varsity and middle school levels. GPS has a proud athletic history with 63 state championships won in 15 total varsity sports.  


  • Create a classroom environment that actively engages students and is developmentally appropriate for the age, maturity, and interests of the students;
  • Plan, develop, and execute lessons that reflect the co-developed physical education curriculum;
  • Employ a variety of instructional and assessment strategies, including, but not limited to, direct instruction, guided practice, and inquiry-based learning activities to facilitate knowledge and skill development;
  • Implement and maintain a standard of performance consistent with GPS’s goals of academic and athletic excellence;
  • Evaluate student progress and develop a path for all students to meet physical education standards in knowledge and skills;
  • Attend and participate in departmental and conference meetings and other required activities;
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior;
  • Coach a minimum of two seasons with the Athletic department; preferably soccer, softball, and/or diving;
  • Serve as an advisor within the school’s advisory program;
  • Cosponsor or sponsor a club or school activity; and
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Head of School, Associate Head, or Division Heads.


  • Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate work in health and fitness, physical education, exercise science, or a related field;
  • MA or MEd is highly desirable;
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience is required;
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certifications;
  • Ability and willingness to coach a minimum of two seasons, preferably at a varsity level;
  • Experience playing and/or coaching a team sport at the high school level, preferably soccer, softball, and/or diving; playing and/or coaching at the college level preferred;
  • Understanding of and commitment to the instructional and educational practices that support, guide, and inspire girls and young women to identify their strengths;
  • Demonstrated commitment to building cultural competencies and empowering students to engage across differences;
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills;
  • Outstanding and varied written and verbal communication skills; and
  • Collegial and eager to collaborate with other faculty members in a cross-disciplinary fashion.
