New Garden Friends School, a PK-12 Friends School in Greensboro, NC, seeks a full-time Middle School Learning Specialist for grades 7 and 8 for the 2021-22 academic year. 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Middle School Learning Specialist works closely with the administrative team and  teaching staff. The Learning Specialist is responsible for designing and coordinating support services for students with learning differences and working with the existing learning specialists. This role includes developing/updating the list of services NGFS offers students and initiating any policy changes with the school administration; working with administrators to assess needs of newly admitted students interpreting outside testing; developing and updating “learning profiles” and recommendations for accommodation for students each fall, meeting with families and students, working with the administrative team to create and/or recommend professional development opportunities for teachers; acting as an advocate for students with learning differences when needed; and communicating with administrators, parents, teachers and advisors in a timely manner so that students receive the support necessary to their success at NGFS. This role also includes working with students in small groups to provide support across the curriculum. The Learning Specialist position is an eleven-month position with some responsibilities during the summer related to preparation for the upcoming academic year.

QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WILL HAVE: 

  • A minimum of a Master’s Degree in special/exceptional education, specific learning differences, reading, or a learning differences-related field.
  • A minimum of three years’ successful experience as a Learning Specialist.
  • Experience interpreting educational testing, designing accommodations, and administering or coordinating school-based programs.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of research on learning and the brain, and of tools and approaches to assist students with learning differences.
  • The ability to articulate and tactfully handle conversations with students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Patience, a sense of humor, and a strong belief that there is inherent good in all.
  • A commitment to the traditions and philosophy of a Quaker educational community, including Quaker values.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work additional hours when the needs of students, families or the school demands arise.
  • A high degree of organization, efficiency, and initiative.
  • Commitment to New Garden Friend School’s mission.
