Job Summary:

Librarians coordinate the library program and manage the library collection. They work as a team to develop and implement procedures for identification, evaluation, acquisition, production, organization, and coordination of the school’s information literacy resources and to motivate, instruct, and assist students and faculty in their effective use. The position is full-time and exempt.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in library or information science

At least three years of experience in a school library environment preferred

Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills

Effective and supportive team member

Strong technology skills

Familiarity and experience with online databases and other electronic resources

Enthusiasm for working with middle school students

Responsibilities:

Program development, implementation, and evaluation

Assist in organizing space and records

Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating the library’s programs, policies, and procedures

Collection development

Develop evaluative criteria and procedures for selecting and obtaining appropriate materials and equipment

Select materials to reflect a diversity of formats and content to support different perspectives and multiple learning styles

Coordinate the selection of all media and equipment necessary to support the instructional program while effectively managing a shared budget

Organize materials and equipment for maximum utilization

Systematically evaluate the collection to identify materials for withdrawal or repair

Work with teachers to plan summer reading assignments

Instruction

Communicate to the school community a knowledge of the materials, equipment, and services available through the library and develop programs to ensure that all members of the school community are able to use the library resources efficiently and independently

Work collaboratively with teachers and the library team to plan, develop, and implement a program of information literacy skills that is coordinated with classroom instruction and activities

Teach age appropriate information literacy skills, research and citation to students using both traditional and online resources

Motivate and guide students’ development of reading, viewing, and listening competencies

Provide reader guidance and reference services to the school community

Provide consulting and special services to support teachers in the performance of their educational roles

Assist other librarians and the Director to develop training materials for teachers and students

Post and maintain project pages for major research projects

Manage online databases

Professional development and leadership

Attend and participate in professional development activities to keep abreast of current trends and research, to be inspired, and to grow professionally

Assist in the development and implementation of an information literacy skills progression integrated within the school-wide curriculum
