Charlotte Latin School has an exciting opportunity for a Middle School Librarian.  Latin is seeking an energetic, creative, and organized librarian who is highly versed in middle school research, literature, teaching methods and learning styles. This position is ideal for individuals with a particular passion for middle school students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Creates a joyful, vibrant and welcoming environment

  • Maintains an attractive, dynamic, current, and well-stocked library conducive to research instruction, independent and group work

  • Organizes the collection and library space for maximum and effective use

  • Promotes a lifelong love of reading and a robust reading culture through regularly scheduled book clubs, book talks, book awards, displays, etc.


  • Advocates for and appreciates Middle School students

  • Collaborates with classroom teachers on their individual curriculums, as well as the librarys information literacy curriculum

  • Empowers students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information

  • Supports student research by teaching students to find appropriate sources of information and consider diverse viewpoints

  • Demonstrates familiarity with copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assists users with their understanding and observation of the same

  • Provides individual assistance and instruction to students, faculty and School community in the use of library resources

  • Remains current in professional practices and developments, information technologies and educational research applicable to School Library programs.

Collection Management

  • Develops collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the students, the instructional strategies of the Schools faculty, and the School’s mission

  • Ensures the library collection represents a diverse and multicultural range of authors and topics

  • Oversees the maintenance of the Middle School librarys collection, including circulation, collection development, inventory, and evaluation

  • Manages and documents the use of the Middle/Upper School Library Book Budget in collaboration with the Upper School and Head Librarians

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in an academic discipline; Masters degree in Library Science preferred

  • Experience working with Middle School Children in a library setting preferred

  • Experience in evaluating and selecting print and digital resources with a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Active member in professional organizations such as ALA, AISL, NCSLMA and AASL


  • Demonstrated success collaborating with faculty in all disciplines to enable/enhance student learning

  • Knowledge and experience in child development, educational practices, and culturally responsive collection management.

  • Knowledge of Apple environment, Google Workspace as well as familiarity with online catalog software and online database providers (Folett Destiny Library Manager, LibGuides)

  • Exceptional organizational skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • An ability to performs work with a constant awareness of improving processes necessary for positive growth

  • Can identify multiple projects and prioritize them in order to meet required deadlines
