The New Community School is currently hiring a Middle School Math Teacher for the 2021-2022 school year.

This teacher will teach small classes of Middle School students in a supportive, professional environment.

Job Description:

The position is for a Middle School Math Teacher who is responsible for creating a learning environment that develops in each student an appreciation of math by providing an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of all students.

Essential Duties:

  • Teach middle school math (6-8 students/class) in order to meet stated standards and objectives.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of pedagogy, course curriculum, content knowledge and the developmental needs of students.
  • Displays understanding of the diverse needs of students with learning differences and adjusts instruction accordingly.
  • Designs authentic learning experiences and assessments.
  • Plans time realistically allowing for learning experiences that lead to content mastery.
  • Engages students in relevant learning experiences utilizing a variety of instructional strategies.
  • Creates a supportive learning environment for all students that is inclusive and respectful, encourages social interaction, embraces diversity, and promotes active engagement in learning.
  • Builds positive, productive, and supportive relationships with students, colleagues, parents and community stakeholders.
  • Serve as the faculty advisor to a small group of students.
  • Facilitates ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including formal written reports in accordance with the school calendar.
  • Teach an additional elective course as needed.
  • Participate in the school’s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring program.
  • Perform other supervisory duties (i.e., athletic coaching) as assigned.
Job Requirements

Requirements: The ideal candidate must possess:

  • A strong interest in working with students with learning differences and how differences can affect the acquisition of math concepts
  • A bachelor’s degree in the applicable field from an accredited college or university
  • Must have or be eligible for a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education
  • Experience in working with students with learning differences is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team
