  Position Description:

St. Mary’s is seeking a Primary Division Head for grades PreK – 2. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position for the 2022-2023 school year. The Primary Division Head is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing an appropriate instructional program in a PreK-8th grade learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their potential. The division head is responsible for creating a positive classroom community and promoting character development.  The Primary Division Head will promote a respectful working environment with his/her assigned primary division teachers and across the entire faculty. Work is performed under the supervision of the Head of School.  Participation is required in weekly Administration meetings, Primary Division teacher meetings, and full faculty meetings.

The Primary Division Head must be comfortable using and learning new or best-practice technology to present information or to expand the curriculum.

Essential Functions:

St. Mary’s Episcopal Day School seeks a dynamic leader qualified to oversee PreK – 2nd grade students and faculty and equally committed to working in a collaborative environment. Candidates must possess specialization in delivering the core curriculum and fostering character development. Responsibilities include:

  • Foster a professional, respectful, and appreciative environment that values the contributions of all team members.
  • Support, carry out, and promote the school’s mission and values and consistently abide by policies and expectations stated in the school’s Employee Handbook.
  • Actively pursue professional development; participate in the school’s professional growth and evaluation framework.
  • Create and maintain an environment that is “safe” physically, emotionally, and socially for each child. Student safety must always be priority number one.
  • Assess students in multiple ways to evaluate their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Assist the Head of School in hiring, supervising, and evaluating all primary teachers as well as enrichment teachers, as assigned.
  • Facilitate professional development and continuing education in the primary division.
  • Assist with the admissions process for prospective PreK-3rd grade students.
  • Oversee the discipline system in the Primary Division.
  • Oversee the communications of Primary Division teachers, including emails and report cards to all school constituencies.
  • Co-lead the curriculum committees regarding meetings, new curriculum implementation, and training as needed.
  • Supervise the design, delivery, implementation, and evaluation of all curriculum programs in the Primary Division.
  • Partner proactively with faculty and administration to support students with different learning styles and teachers in their efforts to advance students with varying
  • Observe and evaluate individual students displaying academic difficulties and collaborate with the Learning Resource Teacher to assess their learning strengths and challenges.
  • Assist the Learning Resource Teacher with coaching classroom teachers on supporting students who have challenges with specific learning needs.
  • Provide direct one-on-one or small group intervention as assessed.
  • Collaborate with the Student Support and Enrichment team to develop and write student accommodation/learning plans with long-term goals and specific objectives.
  • Work with professionals outside the school to support students.
  • Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and assessments.
  • Initiate and schedule parent conferences as needed.
  • Develop and enforce classroom rules as well as helping students uphold the S Mary’s Universals.
  • Create an environment that values diversity and inclusion.
  • Follow child safety and reporting requirements in the case of suspected child abuse or neglect.
  • Attend conferences and professional development opportunities regularly to remain current with industry trends and best practices.
  • Participate in committee, department, and staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events. 
  • Uphold professional standards of personal presentation, punctuality, professional courtesy, and discretion.
  • Be involved in the school community at large.
  • Foster a shared sense of purpose and community among co-workers.
  • Assume responsibility for other projects and duties as assigned by the Head of School.


Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate Degree and Graduate degree in Education or related field.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience working with primary students.
