Summary Description:

Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, the School Counselor promotes student success, provides preventive services, and responds to identified student needs. The School counselor will implement a comprehensive program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students that aligns services with the school’s mission to support academic achievement for all students.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide proactive leadership through collaboration in conjunction with faculty, staff, and community practitioners that engages the entire academic community in the delivery of programs and services to promote a safe and healthy school environment
  • Develop and maintain a plan for the effective delivery of the school counseling program
  • In collaboration with school leaders and the counseling team, establish and develop the activities and resources to implement a comprehensive, developmental and systematic school counseling program
  • Ensure that appropriate and consistent communication of the goals of the school’s counseling program to administrators, teachers, students and parents is taking place.
  • Provide leadership and collaborate with other educators in the school-wide integration of counseling services
  • Gather and utilize student data to develop comprehensive programs that meets and accurately interprets student needs
  • Assist teachers, staff, parents/guardians and others in interpreting and understanding student data and testing
  • Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented classroom and group activities to meet student needs and goals
  • In collaboration with school leadership and teachers, develop and incorporate into the curriculum the life skills training that students need
  • Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators regarding students with identified concerns and social/emotional needs.
  • Serve as a resource to teachers and parents to provide tools for student success
  • Observe and report any unusual behavioral finding or unsafe student activity to administration
  • Observe students in the classroom identified by teachers and assess the issue, provide support in partnership with the teacher and parent
  • Assess whether school counseling can support a student’s need; implement an effective referral process
  • Consult with parents and students on home/school situations that compromise learning
  • Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession
  • Conduct a yearly audit to review program implementation and effectiveness
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills and participate in professional associations and upgrade professional knowledge and skills
  • Provide developmental training to faculty and staff in an effort to increase awareness of developmental needs
  • As requested, participate/conduct in-service programs for faculty; conferences with teachers, students and parents; opportunities for parent education programs
  • Maintain accurate documentation of individual student visits to the Counseling Center
  • Implement and monitor of ethical standards and best practices for counseling services
  • Participate in school/division events as required
