The New Community School is currently hiring a STEAM – Woodworking Teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. This teacher will teach small classes of students in grades 5-12 in a supportive, professional environment.

Job Description
:

The position of STEAM Teacher is responsible for leading the campus wide STEAM instructional program with an emphasis on project-based learning. This position will also incorporate woodworking into our overall STEAM curriculum.

Essential Duties:

  • Delivers STEAM instruction in grades 5-12 utilizing project-based learning methods.
  • Ability to adapt material and methods to meet the diverse needs of learners.
  • Keeps abreast of developments, research, and technology in the area of STEAM including instructional best practices and a deep understanding of state and national standards.
  • Demonstrates self-reliance in mastering new technologies such as robotics and basic coding.
  • Utilizes standards-based assessment to determine students’ mastery of learning objectives.
  • Implements evidence-based teaching and learning practices and designs a full range of meaningful assessments in which students are regularly asked to demonstrate understanding.
  • Explores and integrates a range of resources, including various technologies, to engage, enhance and extend learning goals.
  • Oversees the management of the woodworking space including care of tools, ordering necessary lumber and consumables.
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach basics and safe use of woodworking tools.
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach woodworking skills by producing high quality, handmade products.
  • Understands the role of social, emotional and physical wellbeing in the teaching and learning process and encourages the development of lifelong healthy behavior problems.
  • Encourages students to think independently and express ideas.
  • Contributes to the rich student life program.
  • Serves as the faculty advisor to a small group of students.
  • Facilitates ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including formal written reports in accordance with the school calendar.
  • Participates in the school’s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring program.
  • Participates in on-going professional learning to maintain and improve knowledge of content and instructional strategies.
  • Contributes to the rich student life program.
  • Contributes to other aspects of the school.
  • Performs other supervisory duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
  • Must be eligible or possess Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License.
  • Must possess a strong interest in learning disabilities, exploring varied instructional strategies, and working with students who have struggled in previous school placements.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and the broader community.
  • Must possess a desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.
