The course opens on June 1 and can be joined anytime through July 31.

This online course will be offered June 1-August 31 for experienced public school teachers who are making the move to an independent school. Participants will explore the unique culture and structure of an independent school and what it’s like to work within a mission-aligned school community.

  • Participants should have at least three years of teaching experience in a public or charter school setting.
  • Participants should allow approximately 14-16 clock hours to complete the course.
  • Lessons will guide teachers on what questions to ask and information they need to know about their new school.
  • Through a variety of videos, articles, and guiding questions, participants will gain information about working in an independent school and how it may differ from their previous experience.
  • A downloadable workbook is provided to guide participants as they learn and collect information about their new school. Opportunities for reflection, comparison, and additional questions are also included. The activities are designed to facilitate the relationship between the new teacher and their mentor, division, or department leader.
  • Upon completion of the course and assignments, participants should review their work and remaining questions with their mentor or supervisor. The supervisor may then reach out to SAIS at this link for a certificate of completion with 16 professional development hours noted.
