Schools seeking SAIS membership begin by completing a self-analysis using the candidacy criteria below. These criteria reflect the foundational standards expected of schools pursuing SAIS accreditation and help determine readiness for the membership process.

Candidacy Criteria

• Educational Mission: The institution’s primary purpose is the delivery of an educational experience, evidenced through its mission, values, and strategic objectives.
• Teaching & Learning Program: The school offers a developmental academic curriculum within the K-12 continuum, ensuring continuity and progression and serving a defined student community.
• Faculty: Staffing includes an adequate number of qualified  faculty and staff members to meet the academic and developmental needs of each grade level offered, demonstrating a commitment to excellence in instruction and student support.
• Governance Structure: The school operates under a governance framework that ensures clear accountability, strategic oversight, and alignment with the school’s mission.
• Governance and Management Functions: The organizational structure clearly delineates between governance responsibilities and day-to-day management, fostering effective leadership and accountability.
• Articles of Incorporation: The school is formally incorporated, with documentation that reflects its mission, values, and legal standing, whether held independently or through a sponsoring organization.
• Bylaws: The school possesses formal bylaws that define governance processes and policies, supporting transparency and integrity in its operations.
• Operational Stability: The institution has demonstrated operational stability and viability of active academic programs, serving a defined student community.
• Financial Sustainability: The institution demonstrates sound financial practices and a sustainable funding model, ensuring long-term operational stability and resource allocation that supports its mission.
• Non-Discriminatory Policies: Admissions and employment practices are in compliance with applicable state and federal laws.
