Welcome to the New Trustee Onboarding Toolkit
Serving as a trustee is both an honor and a responsibility. Independent school governance is complex, consequential, and deeply mission driven, and no one is expected to arrive at the board table with everything already figured out.
The New Trustee Onboarding Toolkit is designed to support your transition into board service with clarity, confidence, and shared understanding. This self-paced experience introduces the essential foundations of effective governance and helps align trustees around common expectations, roles, and practices.
The toolkit is organized into eight short sessions, each focused on a core dimension of healthy governance drawn from the Governance Health Index framework. Together, the sessions explore how trustees contribute individually and collectively through collaborative leadership, community engagement, strategic direction, talent cultivation, shared accountability, and adaptive innovation, while remaining grounded in fiduciary responsibility and partnership with the head of school.
Each session includes a brief video, targeted readings, practical scenarios, and reflection prompts designed to connect governance principles to real board work. Sessions are self paced and typically take about 30 minutes each to complete. Most trustees complete the full toolkit in approximately three to four hours, spread out over multiple sittings.
This onboarding experience is not an evaluation. It is a learning and growth opportunity intended to help you understand how governance works at your school, where you can contribute most meaningfully, and how to build strong habits from the start of your service.
We encourage you to move through the sessions thoughtfully, revisit them as needed, and use the reflection prompts to shape your first year trustee growth plan. Strong boards are built over time, and effective trustees are always learning.
We are glad you are here and grateful for your willingness to serve.
