As technology continues to transform learning environments, schools are rising to meet increasing cybersecurity challenges with focus and strategic planning. Between July 2023 and December 2024, 82% of K-12 institutions nationwide encountered cyber incidents, according to a March 2025 report from the nonprofit Center for Internet Security. School leaders are encouraged to proactively address threats such as ransomware, phishing, social engineering, data breaches, and denial-of-service attacks. The 2024 SAIS EdTech pulse survey demonstrates a commitment to addressing these challenges, with 58% of technology leaders prioritizing cybersecurity enhancement as a top institutional goal. Previous cyberattacks on SAIS schools have resulted in encrypted networks, compromised email systems, and wire fraud, making cybersecurity threats one of the top five challenges facing IT departments.

Today’s cybersecurity investments are laying the foundation for safer, more resilient digital environments to better support students, teachers, and overall school operations. Below, we’ve outlined the current challenges facing K-12 institutions and the unique situations impacting independent schools. The second deck includes cybersecurity planning tools, sample frameworks, assessments, and training options for staff and students.
