By fostering meaningful relationships and stimulating student motivation, advisory time can help maximize student success. This engaging workshop helps educators get the most out of advisory time, whether starting a new program or fine-tuning an existing structure.

Esteemed presenter Barb Ackerman will cover all aspects of advisory, share both meaningful activities for advisory time and best-practices, and troubleshoot with participants. The weekend culminates in participants creating their own action plans for immediate and long-range goals. The “advisory period” is also put into the broader context of a school’s mission for social, moral and academic development. Presenters offer tools to translate this mission into day-to-day advisory activities. Advisors will leave with materials, insights, and methods to be successful.

This two-day workshop will explore:

  • Why make time for advisory? How do we fit advising into busy school days and a full school calendar?
  • The importance of the advisor/advisee relationship.
  • How to prepare advisors to fulfill their significant role in students’ lives, and how to help resistant / reluctant advisors to feel more comfortable.
  • How an active advising program can help a school to achieve its stated mission.

Participants can expect to come away with:

  • Knowledge of advising practices and procedures at a variety of schools from across the country.
  • Strategies for working with individual advisees.
  • Ideas for school-wide advising events.
  • An action plan consisting of immediate improvements as well as long-range goals.
  • Participants are encouraged to bring relevant curricula and activities to share with others.
