SAIS welcomes articles and story ideas from member schools and those in the wider independent school world. We are interested in those that focus on independent school leadership, best practices, and innovative approaches to teaching, learning, and leading in our schools.

Submission Guidelines

  • Content should be widely applicable and must not seek to promote any specific vendor, company, product, or event.
  • Published articles become the property of SAIS and will be housed on the SAIS website.
  • Articles will be copyedited for clarity and style.
  • SAIS does not compensate authors for submissions.

Audience

  • Headlines is delivered monthly via email to over 15,000 school leaders and friends of the independent school community.
  • Readers might be anyone from a classroom teacher to a head of school and represent a wide variety of school types, sizes, and missions.
  • Our audience enjoys articles that cover emerging trends, current challenges, and cutting-edge innovations in independent schools, stories that share how a school has approached a strategic initiative, or how school leaders can improve teaching and learning in their school. Best practices and innovative ideas in enrollment management, advancement, and student wellness are welcomed as well.
  • Readers seek content that is useful, important, and relevant. Does the article offer value in the form of information, best practices, tips, advice, analysis, or resources?

Logistics

  • Articles are usually around 1,500 words.
  • First impressions count. The title of your article should make the reader want to click to learn more.  
  • Be clear and concise in your writing and use bullets when appropriate.
  • We use Oxford commas and single space after periods.
  • You are welcome to include pictures, charts, or graphs that will enhance your article.
  • Hyperlinking to external resources mentioned is encouraged.
  • Include a short bio and headshot to be used with the article.
  • Please let us know if the article has been previously published, where, and when.
  • Submissions may be emailed as a word or google doc. Please do not send as a PDF.
